Surge in Medical Claims Among Australian Travellers Highlights Importance of Comprehensive Insurance

In 2024, medical incidents emerged as the leading cause of travel insurance claims among Australian travellers, accounting for more than 40% of all claims handled by nib Travel.
This trend underscores the critical importance of securing comprehensive travel insurance to mitigate the financial risks associated with medical emergencies abroad.

One of the most notable cases involved a claim exceeding $3 million, highlighting the potential high costs of medical treatment overseas. Other significant claims, many reaching six-figure sums, were lodged by travellers to destinations such as the United States, Japan, and within Australia. Notably, medical claims from travellers within Australia alone amounted to over $10 million from more than 2,200 cases.

The United States topped the list for total medical expenses, despite having fewer claims (674 in total). This is attributed to the high cost of healthcare in the U.S. and currency exchange factors that inflate costs for Australian travellers.

Dylan Wilkinson, General Manager for International and Partnerships at nib Travel, emphasized the unpredictability and potential expense of medical events while travelling. He highlighted cases such as an Australian traveller in the U.S. who became seriously ill, requiring several weeks of hospitalization and eventual repatriation via air ambulance. Another case involved a traveller who sustained multiple injuries while diving in Indonesia, necessitating an extended overseas stay before being able to return home.

These examples illustrate that medical emergencies can occur unexpectedly, regardless of the destination. Without adequate insurance, travellers may face substantial out-of-pocket expenses that can be financially devastating.

To ensure adequate protection, travellers should:

  • Obtain comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, evacuations, and repatriation.
  • Understand the specific coverage details, including any exclusions or limitations.
  • Be aware of the healthcare costs in their destination country and ensure their coverage limits are sufficient.
  • Consider additional coverage for activities that may be deemed high-risk.

By taking these precautions, Australian travellers can safeguard themselves against the financial implications of unforeseen medical events during their journeys.
