NTARC Report Identifies Inattention and Speed as Primary Factors in Major Truck Crashes

NTARC Report Identifies Inattention and Speed as Primary Factors in Major Truck Crashes

The National Truck Accident Research Centre (NTARC) has released its latest Major Incident Investigation Report, shedding light on the predominant causes of significant truck crashes across Australia.
The findings reveal that human factors, particularly inattention, distraction, and inappropriate speed, continue to be the leading contributors to these incidents.

According to the report, inattention or distraction accounted for 17.9% of major truck crashes in 2024, marking a 1.6% decrease from the previous year. While this reduction is a positive development, the prevalence of such incidents underscores the need for ongoing vigilance and targeted interventions within the transport sector.

Dr. Jasmine Proud from Monash University's Accident Research Centre highlighted that these incidents are predominantly single-vehicle crashes, suggesting that the transport industry is well-positioned to address this issue internally. By implementing comprehensive training programs and fostering a culture of attentiveness, operators can significantly mitigate the risks associated with driver distraction.

Inadequate following distance emerged as the second most common human factor, with 80% of these incidents occurring in metropolitan areas. This statistic highlights the challenges posed by urban driving conditions and the critical importance of maintaining safe distances between vehicles to prevent collisions.

Additionally, the report notes a decline in crashes related to inappropriate speed over the past five years, decreasing from 13.8% in 2019 to 8.6% in 2024. This trend suggests that efforts to promote speed compliance are yielding positive results. However, it also indicates that speed-related incidents are not confined to high-speed environments; factors such as vehicle stability, load movement, and the design of articulated trucks play significant roles, especially when navigating curves.

For Australian freight operators, these findings serve as a crucial reminder of the importance of addressing human factors in their safety protocols. Implementing regular driver training sessions focused on maintaining attention, managing speed appropriately, and understanding vehicle dynamics can substantially reduce the likelihood of accidents.

Moreover, leveraging technology such as telematics can provide real-time data on driver behavior, enabling operators to identify and rectify risky practices promptly. By fostering a proactive approach to safety, the transport industry can work towards reducing the incidence of major truck crashes and enhancing overall road safety.

In conclusion, the NTARC report underscores the critical role of human factors in major truck crashes. By prioritizing driver attentiveness, appropriate speed management, and safe following distances, the transport sector can make significant strides in mitigating risks and ensuring the safety of all road users.
