NTARC Report: Inattention and Speed Major Factors in Truck Accidents

The National Truck Accident Research Centre (NTARC) has released its 2025 Major Incident Investigation Report, shedding light on the primary human factors contributing to significant truck crashes across Australia.
The findings emphasize the critical roles of inattention, distraction, and inappropriate speed in these incidents, underscoring the necessity for targeted safety interventions within the transport industry.

According to the report, incidents attributed to inattention or distraction accounted for 17.9% of major truck crashes in 2024, reflecting a 1.6% decrease from the previous year. This slight improvement suggests that while progress has been made, there remains a substantial need for continued focus on mitigating these risks.

Dr. Jasmine Proud from Monash University's Accident Research Centre noted that these incidents are predominantly single-vehicle crashes, indicating that the transport sector is well-positioned to address this issue internally. She emphasized the importance of industry-led initiatives to enhance driver awareness and reduce distractions.

Inadequate following distance was identified as the second most common human factor in truck crashes, with 80% of these incidents occurring in metropolitan areas. This statistic highlights the challenges associated with heavy and light vehicle interactions in urban environments and the need for improved driver training and awareness.

Additionally, the report observed a decline in crashes related to inappropriate speed over the past five years, dropping from 13.8% in 2019 to 8.6% in 2024. This trend suggests that efforts to promote speed management are yielding positive results, yet continuous vigilance is required to sustain and further this progress.

For transport business owners, fleet managers, and self-employed drivers, these findings underscore the importance of implementing comprehensive safety programs. Such programs should focus on enhancing driver training, promoting adherence to speed limits, and fostering a culture of attentiveness on the road.

Investing in advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and telematics can also play a pivotal role in monitoring and improving driver behavior. These technologies provide real-time feedback and data analytics, enabling proactive measures to prevent accidents.

In conclusion, the NTARC's 2025 report serves as a crucial reminder of the ongoing challenges within the transport industry. By prioritizing safety initiatives and embracing technological advancements, the sector can work towards reducing the incidence of major truck crashes and ensuring the well-being of all road users.
